Augh...I hate the 'drama' in theatre...and I'm not talking about the actual acting, haha, funny. NOT.

See, a lot of people will tell you that if they have a problem with you they will tell you, NOT! I HATE, I mean HATE confrontation, so I try my best to use the computer (email and IM, etc) because I really don't like face to face confrontation...
But it seems that A LOT of people in the theatre will go to others if they have a problem with you, or if they want info about what's up with you, etc, etc...

Well, long story short one of the girls on the current play (who was also the costumer) got "fired" and replaced...and the director e-mailed us all to say she had been replaced....

I sent him a casual e-mail asking why she was replaced....

Well, HE e-mailed the stage manager saying "Will you take care of this for me?" and then the stage manager e-mailed ME.....OMFG!

Is he not man enough to tell me he does not want to discuss it? If he can fire someone surely he can tell someone no...

Ugh, it REALLLLLLYYY pisses me off that people do that... It makes me want to quit.... At this point I want to....but probably won't because I've already begun and I don't want to risk not being welcome back...

But goodness, I HATE when people are like that....

Okay, I'm done...still kinda pissed....but done...

Well tonight was closing night for Laughing Wild...a happy and sad thing at the same time....
As a cast/crew unit we got on strike 2 with the director...but she is a good sport, she's awesome..plus she knows there are ways to get us back...but know this...
Techies ALWAYS have a way of messing you up or making you look stupid (Like the examples I will tell you about in a moment....)...it's the best part of our job. Hahaha.....

So, Strike #1....Our Light and Sound techs...
Sooo, the light guy, Mike, is the directors wife...and before the show she gets up and adresses the audience, (turn off cell phones and pagers[does anyone still have those] and season tix, etc, etc..) Well, she told Mike NO spotlight, just bring up houselights....
Note to self.... **When giving instructions BE SPECIFIC (and when taking them, you can TOTALLY read between the lines!)**
So, she never told the sound tech no spot...Soooo, they put a nice pink gel on the spotlight, and put that on her while she gave her little spheel...hehehe...We could hear her on our greenroom monitor....something like "I'm not use to the spotlight, damn I can't see...." after...she went to the light booth..."You guys..." And that was it....

Strike #2.... ON STAGE line change....
Soo...there is this line in the play where "the man" says.... "...that reminds me of someone I know and like named...Maratha Rhodes..." Before he went on stage, I said, "Clark, when that line comes up, say Elicia *last-name-here*"
And he didn't say anything....
Yet, as Carole *the woman* and I sat backstage listening to him, he said it!!! I was like OMG, he did it! And C. was suprised too, SCORE!

So, as techies we all the on headphones, (Cuz if we could read minds we wouldn't need them), I said, "So, how'd she like THAT one?" (The light and sound booth has clear view of everything not backstage.) Mike was like..."She's still laughing*her head in hands*"

And then during strike... Mike and I decided that the stage manager the the next play, "The Crucible" Which is Elicia, has to paint the stage. We told her and she looked at me with 'that look'.... (Because I am ASM for The Crucible) and I said, "Not the ASSISTANT SM, the SM...."

It's all in good humor...we all end up helping anyways....

Like with the curtains...the director for Crucible wants the back curtain moved back several feet...the thing is, is that you can't just un-hook and move the curtain back, you have to take them ALL down and then move the bars they hang on back too....and those are HEAVY bars! This guy just does NOT get it....
But whatever, we will end up doing it anyway...

Techies are THE most worked and least credited...Not that we really look for recognition...just making a point.

Sooo...the Crucible rehearsal for us continues on Monday....

And it's late and I am tired....been up since 6am....
And my kidneys hurt....No, seriously...my back, right where they are is giving me these sharp pains when I breath in and out.....

Yea, I need sleep.

I think I'll go to bed.

Oh, but before that...I have to say that this REALLY REALLY bitchy girl that had a part is the next play got "fired" SCORE!!! Now we don't have to deal with her! Elicia and I were like...We are gonna have to hold each other back to keep from beating this girl up...lol, kidding....

But seriously the safety of the actors is the least of my problems....every show I tell them, "Break a Leg!"

Although...this one guy told his friedn that once...and his friend really DID break his leg....

So, something less harmles...

"Hey, M-n-E, stub a toe!!!"

Techies....don't get sick.... techies don't get sick...I AM NOT getting sick...

*Whine*
I don't feel good....

You know that flu on-set feeling? You know, the baaadddd headache, and the not really tiredness, but the sluggish-ness, and that feeling in your stomach-- like you just downed an entire jar of jalepeno's?

I have felt this way since Wednesday at work...just not that bad...but it's getting progressivly worse...tonight I got to the theatre and it's 111 degrees outside...yet I am wearing a sweatshirt and still a bit cold... WTF!?!?!?

Carole, who plays "the woman" was the only one there...I talked to her and then went and set the stage for the first act...

They all figured out I was not feeling well....

And then things get worse...my tummy felt like it was gonna pop and I got really queezy...and I felt like I was gonna fall asleep or pass out...luckly neither happened...

And then my set crew guy, Edison decided NOT to grace us with his prescence....THANKS, AGAIN. So Elicia, the director came back to help me with set changes because it would take forever to change them alone... It's not a really big set or anything....
One side is the grocery store aisle, (stocked with misc food and TUNA of course...), and then when I turn it around it's magically the Sally Jesse Raphael set....I think it's about...8x8? So yea, not huge, but you still need 2 people...one on either side to guide it on the rollers...

Maybe I can get some pics....I wish I knew where the dic was...I have over 1,800 photos...

Oh...wait...lookie there...it's in my jewel case....imagine that! What a good place for it...

I will upload some pictures tomarrow morning, I really don't feel very good.... :-/

Well, our sound guy had to leave us...and with 3 performances left we had to get another sound tech...so tonights pick-up rehearsal...(GOD I love them..SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny!) was a tech rehearsal....But I'm da kewl SM and I got to watch instead of change sets...

I was...still am not feeling well...I'm cold and my tummy hurts... But remember techies don't get sick...No...that's a lie, we get sick, we just have to deal with it and go to rehearsal/runs...

Augh, can this NOT wait until Sunday night? THAT way we'll be done with Laughing Wild's run and set strike and I wil be out of school and I can call Elicia and she can cover Crucible rehearsals and I will have time to get someone to cover for me at work Wednesday....Wouldn't it be great if one could plan that?

Anyhow, Clark, (one of our actors...) "Da Man" (because his character is not named...actually, the woman is just 'the woman' too...) So, his birthday was today, and I made him a chocolate chip cheese cake, and wrote "Happy Birthday Clark" in chocolate on top of it...and then we put candles on it and he made a wish....He's a single gay guy...we asked that he keep his wish to himself.... *Dirty*Dirty*!!! lol, I was SO not thinking that!

And then we cleaned up and started the 2nd act...but I told Elicia I was gonna go home to study...and I am...a little....I pretty much know the info...thing is, is that once the test is in front of me all the info flys out of my ears and into the book....I could memorize for weeks and still fail a test... Anyone up for an at home essay?

Whatever....

I am really gonna miss these guys once we finish up...I forget how great they are to work with... and then I look at the next cast... And then the hair pulling begins...

Well...I guess I better go hit the books....
But not before my techie prayer....

"...Lord grant me the Serenity to accept the things that I cannot change, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to hide the bodies of those actors I had to kill because they pissed me off. ..."

Short and sweet....hahahaha, yeah, me at a loss for words online, THAT is a good one...
So...this is my first blogger...I DO have a xanga however....
The reason I have a blogger...(jesus, that sounds SOOO close to booger...) is because I know some who DO and I have to be a member to bug them, Muhahaha!

So about me....

I am currently Stage Managing a play called Laughing Wild. And I love it! Long story short the direcotor is my aunts best friend and she also is friends with me madre.... She called me one night a few months ago and was like, "Hi, it's Elicia, so, I need a stage manager for the play I am directing, wanna do it...?" "Uh..well, Elicia, I have not done ANY theatre for 3 years and I have never stage managed." "Oh good, so you'll do it?" "Yes, sure...when's rehearsal?" "Tonight, see you at 5:30..." *click*
Well, mabe it was not that brutal...but still...
So, we are ending our 3 week run this Saturday...our pick-up rehearsal is tomarrow and we run Thurs-Sat and strike set Saturday night...
I'm so sad...This play is a cast of 2 and tech team of 4...So we got kinda close....lots of good laughs and memories...
But nothing to fret about! I have ALREADY begun rehearsal for THE NEXT play...it's going to be The Crucible....we have been going for a few weeks now...and I am Assistant Stage Managing under Laughing Wild's director, Elicia who is the stage manager for The Crucible. Talk about a large cast, about 18-25...Eeeekkkk!

Culture shock! I went from a kiddie pool to the ocean with sharks surrounding me!
But...at least I'm only asst. and I have someone VERY experienced over me. I am SO ready to get this rolling.
The director made us both these binders of the play, he typed out...god he has WAY to much time on his hands... I usually just write in my script...but I DO like the binder, much bigger print.
Scary things are happening....hahaha....

Ugh...well, I better get going...I have school tomarrow...and then work...and then off to rehearsal... I really miss that stuff...oh...what's it called....air? Yea, that's it, what's it like to breathe?

Oh, and one last thing before I leave....some bible verses...

Proverbs From the Techie Bible:

I. Give not unto the actor his props before his time, for assuredly as the sun does rise in the East and sets in the West, he will lose or break them.
II. When told the placement of props by the Director, write n ot these things in ink upon thy script for as surely as the winds blow, so shall he change his mind.
III. Speak not in large words to actors, for they are slow of thought and are easily confused.
IV. Speak no in the language of the TECHIE to actors, for they are uninitiated, and will not perceive thy meaning.
V. Tap not the head of a nail to drive it, but strike it firmly with thy strength.
VI. Keep holy the first performance, for afterwards you shall party.
VII.Keep holy the last performance, for afterwards you shall party.
VIII. Remember always that the TD is never wrong. If it appears that he is, then you obviously misunderstood him for the first time.
IX. Leave no the area of the stage during the play to go and talk with the actors, for as surely as you do, you will be in danger of missing your cue and being summarily executed or worse.
X. Beware of actors when flying in walls, for they will stand and watch and be crushed.
XI. Beware of actors during scene changes, for they are not like unto you and are blind in the dark.
XII.Take not they cues before their time, but wait for the proper moment to do so.
XIII.Take pity on the actors, for in their roles they are as children, and must be led with gentle kindness. Thus, endeavor to speak softly and not in anger.
XIV. Listen carefully to the instructions of the Director as to how he wants things done-- then do it the right way. In the days of thy work, he will see thy wisdom, give himself the credit, and rejoice.
XV. If it is not yours, do not touch it, for surely as you do, your hand will be severed.
XVI. If you break it, you shall buy it.
XVII. It is not the question, "What if something goes wrong?" but, What will go wrong?"
XVIII. The question, "Why do we have to sing?" when doing a musical, should never be asked.
XIX. Do not miss your cue, for as you do, your world will crash down upon your head.
XX. The only valid excuse for missing one's cue is death.
XXI. Do not overestimate the audience.
XXII. Do not underestimate the audience.
XXIII. Always write down your blocking notes, for if you do not, the stage manager shall punish you.
XIV. One must always check their props, for if thou don't, they will mysteriously disappear.
XXV. To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is to be replaced.
XVI. And above all, get carried away not with the glow-tape or they stage will be like unto an airport.
