The Adventures of "Smart Ash"
Just me and my occasional ramblings!

We began this work week, on Tuesday, with 9 of our normal 11 because 2 were out with pnemonia and the flu... by Wednesday we were down to 6, by Thursday we were down to 5 and this morning we lost one more and were down to 4... FOUR people to do the work of 11... now... our jobs are not so much "hard" as they are VERY demanding... but 4 people for 11?

Our nightime activites were VERY difficult as we only had 4 people for campfire, and 3 for folk dance. A typical campfire has about 6 or 7 people and a typical folk dance has 5 or so. It was do-able... but difficult... NOT TO MENTION that our Lead Teacher was out all week and our Activities Coordinator was sick ALL week, but still came (bless her!) However due to being sick she could not help as much as usual, (but still a GREAT deal!)...

We managed to get everything in line and in order all week and clean up wise. Go us!

On another work note... here is part of the reason I <3 my job:

Photobucket

This is Bob (and me). Bob is an American Kestrel, one of the smallest types of Falcons. Each trail I get to bring him and out use him to teach the students about Raptors and Birds of Prey and Adapations and some other things... He's a great little bird.

He not a pet, he's a wild animal, however he's been worked with enough so that we can, usually, coax him into letting us pick him up.

We have 5 birds at our raptor center. All of our birds have come to us due to injury and we, with the help of vets have not been able to rehabilitate them, thus making them non-releasable... so they stay with us and we care for them. Bob is at our center because he only has 1 1/2 wings. (A BIG problem for a bird who flys 80mph and has to fly in order to hunt and catch his prey.) We have another Kestrel "Peggy" who has 1 1/2 wings and 1 leg, a Turkey Vulture named Charlie who had a severly broken wing that was unable to heal correctly, a Great Horned Owl named Chip who for the lack of a better term has "emotional problems" and is unable to hunt because of it, and Zephyr a Peregrin Falcon who had a severe break near her shoulder that needed a pin to fix and then it still never healed well enough for her to fly (a problem for a bird that has been clocked at speeds of up to 220 mph!)

....And now I am late for my vocal lesson.... more later!
